Using the Technological Innovation to Distinguish Resources, Capacities and Core Competences in the Brazilian Mobile Phone Sector
The mobile phone sector has been through a technological innovation process. These innovations affect the strategies of this sector and establish high competition between them. Thinking on the third generation of mobile phone, the companies in Brazil are choosing between two technologies (Code Division Mobile Access - CDMA; Global System for Mobile - GSM). These technologies will permit that Brazilian companies can gain competitive advantages, offering new services and solutions to the costumers. This study was made with the two biggest Brazilian mobile phone companies (Company A; Company B), that together represent 67% of the country market share. So, the main objective of this study was to make a comparison between the competitive advantages, based on theoretical reference, which allowed distinguishing resources, capacities and core competences of each company. In this comparison, two kinds of competitive advantages were found for Company A at the theoretical point of view (Positional Capacity and Strategic Interaction and Technology) and two kinds of competitive advantages for Company B (Cost Control and Strategic Interaction and Technology), highlighting that, even in comparison, the competitive advantages found came straight from the technological option of each company.
