FDI and Innovation in China: Evidence from Panel Data of Patent 1987 - 2002
China has been the largest recipient of FDI among the developing countries in the 1990s and the inward FDI has a profound influence upon Chinese firms innovation activities. We use the amount of patent applications granted as the measure of R&D output, and separate the spillover effect of FDI from the effects of other factor. Our analysis is based on panel data of patent from 1987 to 2002; we find positive effects of FDI on domestic technical innovation in China but FIEs strategy of investment patent has baffled local firms technical update to some extent.
