The Practices of Laboratory Waste Reduction in Cell Biology Teaching Laboratory
Laboratory waste has resulted in real and potential threats to public health and safety in China. To reduce the generation of biological laboratory waste is the most effective means to reduce its threats to public health and the environment. Cell biology laboratory is a compulsory course for biology, medicine and other biology-related majors. In our cell biology laboratory course, thirty-six kinds of chemicals and seven kinds of organisms are used. Among these chemicals, eighteen ones are non-hazardous;three are corrosive;thirteen are toxic;and two are carcinogenic and highly toxic. From 2006, we practiced our waste reduction plan and the waste generated in our teaching experimentation decreased rapidly. Our practices include the bellow behaviors: making detailed experimental plan to avoiding the wastage of chemicals and organisms in laboratory preparation, reducing the usage of highly toxic chemicals and experimental animals and plants in experimentation, disposing the laboratory waste as possible as we can and directing students by several means to reduce waste generation in experiments.
