Development of Mathematics Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants play vital roles in the mathematics education of undergraduates and may become mathematics professors. Patterns of teaching practice, as well as beliefs about teaching and learning, form early in teachers careers. This article contains reviews of teaching in context and a balance of the art and science of teaching. Teaching in context can be defined as teaching a mathematical idea or process by using a problem, situation, or data to enhance the teaching and learning process. A balance of the art and science of teaching is essential if the learning and teaching process is to be a meaningful and rewarding educational journey. Discussion of research based literature on college teaching and personal experiential refleetivity merged and resulted in an organizing framework for understanding the artistic and mechanic elements of effective instruction.
