Chinas Higher Education VS English Cultural Hegemony

After the Cold War, culture has been used as an important means by the United States and other Western countries to seek and execute their global hegemony. Greatly influenced by English cultural hegemony, many China intellectuals recognize that Western civilization had an advantage over Chinese civilization. Quite a few young Chinese students take nihilism attitude towards Chinese culture. They blindly worship the West, strive to study in developed countries such as the United States and the UK and so forth, but after graduation most of them refuse to return home to serve their mother country, making China suffer a considerable brain drain to United States and other Western developed countries. It is the responsibility of Chinas higher education to produce a new young generation who have ardent love for the motherland, filled with cultural selfconfidence and cultural consciousness, and devote themselves to Chinas modernization process. China will thus be able to ensure its harmonious development in all way round, and truly win the respect of the rest of the world. To achieve this goal, Chinas higher education should reset College Chinese as a required course for all the college students, and College English course should include more Chinese culture. The College English teachers should employ the critical discourse analysis (CDA) theory to strengthen students language criticism consciousness, which is of great importance to the effective resistance against the impact of English cultural hegemony on the Chinese cultural security.
