Analysis of Dynamic Performance of Cable-Stayed Bridges with CFRP Cables
The advantages of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) include high specific strength-to-weight and stiffness to-weight ratios, excellent corrosion resistance, as well as outstanding fatigue behavior, which make the material applicable for stay cables. CFRP is one of the methods to solve the problems of corrosion. The density of CFRP is only 20% of that of steel, therefore the dynamic performance of cable stayed bridges with steel cables and CFRP cables will be different especially for long-span bridges. As a case study, three-dimensional FEM analyses using the ANSYS program were carried out for the two types of cables based on the longest cable-stayed bridge, which is the super-long Sutong Yangtze River bridge in China. Some useful conclusions are drawn to provide basis for applying CFRP cables.
