Right-Angle Crash Injury Severity Analysis Using Ordered Probability Models
A lot of crashes happened at signalized intersections in the cities. As right-angle crashes at signalized intersection tend to be severe, this paper analyzes factors affecting right angle crash injury severity. Our study made use of 197 four legged signalized intersections from Orange and Hillsborough counties, Florida. Information which includes roadway inventory data, traffic control and operational features, estimated traffic volume in the hour of crash from was collected. In addition to all crash related variables, accident report format was changed from long to short to avoid correlation and overrepresentation. Ordered probability models were developed to examine the factors significantly contributing to the severity of right-angle crashes given that an accident had occurred. The results of the modeling process showed that person ejected or not, alcohol and/or drug use, the drivers age, point of impact, and standardized yellow time for entering movement were significant variables affecting the average severity of accidents.
