Artery System Signal Scheme Modified During Adverse Weather
Adverse weather has an important effect on driver behavior, roadway safety, and roadway mobility. Coordination control in typical clear conditions may be an uncoordinated and sub-optimal. Therefore, signal system should adapt to changing traffic flows and travel conditions. This paper tries to modify signal scheme to adapt to the weather conditions. Firstly, speed-flow model of weather events is built, and saturation flow and green light interval time are modeled in adverse weather respectively. Secondly, the necessity of timing scheme modification is confirmed through an experimental artery system. Signal scheme has obviously been changed in order to adapt to the significant change of traffic flow during adverse weather. Finally, signal scheme for the experimental artery system is anewly optimizedly devised in adverse weather based on fixed-time control. Comparing the new plan with the former plan, total delays of all intersections are decreased by 10%. Therefore, the necessity of timing scheme modification is further confirmed.
