Irrigation Water Efficiency and Its Determinants-An Empirical Analysis Based on Survey Data in Northwest China

According to the survey data of 432 farmers in Northwest China, the author uses the methods of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to reckon Irrigation Water Efficiency of farm households, and studies the specific factors affecting inefficient productive allocation of agricultural water under the shortage of water resources with TOBIT regression model. The study yields the following main results. Firstly, farmers age, income, education level and the farms size tend to affect the degree of irrigation water efficiency positively. Secondly, water flow, water price and irrigation method showed a significant impact on irrigation water efficiency. Such information is valuable for extension services and policy makers since it can help to guide policies towards increased efficiency.
