Calculation and Analysis of Anti-cracking Ability of ATB

In order to study the anti-cracking mechanism of large-stone asphalt base, a multi-layer elastic theory program is utilized to calculate the load stress in different pavement structures. Then the Finite-Element model is established based on an instant heat-conducting hypothesis to calculate the temperature stress and the strain of pavement structure when temperature is lowered. The stress and the strain of all the structural layers are calculated considering the coupling effect of loading and temperature. It is found that the stress caused by quickiy-lowered temperate is far more lager than the stress cause by load. Thus it is revealed that the cracking in pavement is mainly caused by the temperature. In contrast, it is found that the pavement stress and the strain caused by load and temperature of the structure in asphalt macadam mixture (ATB30) base are less than that of the conventional semi-rigid pavement. Finally, an asphalt macadam mixture base in pavement structure is proved an efficient way to decrease cracking in asphalt pavement.
