Experimental Investigation of Solar Light Pipes Used in Lavatory under Sunny Conditions in Beijing

Solar light pipes are better alternative lighting method without skylights and windows in lavatories. Beijing Olympic buildings develop the concepts of solar light pipes for Green Olympics and High-tech Olympics. There are 4 lavatories with daylighting by solar light pipes in Beijing Olympic Forest Park. Illumination, uniformity ratio of illuminance and the intensity of UV light were tested of solar light pipes under sunny conditions in Beijing. The experimental results show that the solar light pipes can meet the needs of the daylighting under sunny conditions in Beijing without electric lighting. The maximum illuminance can achieve 245lux, and the minimum illuminance can achieve 136.9lux under sunny conditions in Beijing. Uniformity ratios of illuminance are better for these solar light pipes. The experimental results also showed that solar light pipes can remove most of UV light and no harmful to human health.
