Urbanization and Rural Problems in China: A Challenge for Environmentally Harmonious and Sustainable Society

Urbanization is characterized by agglomeration of production and consumption, which stimulates overall economic growth. China is now experiencing a rapid increase in urbanization. It is predicted that in 2030 urban populations in China will amount to 60% (one thousand million) of the total population, and the population of megalopolis such as Shanghai and Beijing will exceeds 20 million. Although urbanization in China can be characterized in various aspects, one of the most important features is the development of urban systems balanced between urban and regional areas. Through the analysis of present urbanization and rural problems, this paper tries to find a way of environmentally harmonious and sustainable society between urban and rural areas in China.
