Research on the environmental impact of roof kitchen garden in Urban Area
Self-sufficiency ratio for food in Japan has decreased in resent years. It fell below 40％ in calorie-base in 2006. On the other hand people who live in city are interested in kitchen garden more and more. They want recreation activity, local food and safety. But, the shortage of ground in city is always a serious problem. Roof kitchen garden is an epochmaking idea to use the existing roof space stock and solve this annoying problem. Tokyo Metropolitan Government put new nature conservation low which force new building owner to green 20％ area of roof of their building, if total floor area of their building is more than 1,000m2 in April 2001. Although roof kitchen garden is an amazing idea, according to this low, it doesnt pass greening standard and is not included in roof greening. We have investigated 4 roof kitchen gardens in Tokyo and calculated the quantity of the environmental impact of roof kitchen garden with LCA accumulating system and have compared it with that of the conventional agriculture to develop the effect of the environmental impact reduction of roof kitchen garden. The result shows that to get 100g-vegitable from roof kitchen garden we exhaust 44gCO2, 0.022gNOx and 0.003gSOx. And if we eat 100g-tomato from roof kitchen garden instead of that from Hokkaido, we can reduce 16gCO2 (27％), 0.20gNOx(89％) and 0.086gSOx(95％) exhaust. Considering that the roof kitchen gardens function as a green space in summer, effect of the environmental impact reduction and the effect of food production, these are very profitable facilities. We expect Tokyo Metropolitan Government will adapt flexible greening rules.
