A Study of Factors to Make Rooftop Garden Sustainable and Autonomous Knowledge acquired by the Rooftop garden which has been maintained for 94 years
Rooftop gardens are drawing attention as a means of reducing CO2 emissions, increasing green space in the city and improving the urban environment and amenities. It may be difficult to maintain artificial green space on the rooftop for long term without regarding the sustainability and self-supporting of plants. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the factors which enable rooftop gardens to be kept long term.We studied the roof top garden of the former Akita Company building, which was constructed in 1915 in Japan as a representative model. This building has a rooftop garden which has been maintained for 94 years. We made investigation into the drainage and watering system, roof slant, soil layer, selection of the trees and the maintenance cost. In consequence, we found that a simple watering system had been installed in order to supply water to the roots effectively. The rooftop slant was designed to be steeper than usual. The purpose was to facilitate drainage of excess water quickly to avoid the bad effect on the plant roots and to protect from the structure from over load and from water leakage in the roof. The trees were planted with the intention of avoiding over load on the structure and for protection against strong wind and fire. Clay was set at the bottom of the soil to keep the roots away for protection of the slab. Maintenance costs for this garden have been kept low by not using a mechanical watering system and so on. Little fertilizers was used in order to the growth of the trees. Watering was needed only in summer time. The five investigated factors;were 1) drainage and watering, 2) roof slant, 3) soil layer, 4) selection of the trees and 5) economical cost of maintenance worked together effectively. These factors made it possible to maintain the rooftop garden for long time.
