Development of Method for Measurement of Living Environment Based on Residents Participation through Making Living Environment Map

The improvements of living environment in district scale such as noise, air pollution, street illuminance contribute to realize the urban environment with high quality. Residents should be positive and active to improve their exterior environment of their district. One way to enhance their interests in the exterior environment and promote their motivations of its improvement is residents participation. It is necessary for residents to have exact quantitative data concerning actual state of living environment as their problems became serious. I focused on residents association as the organizations which are engaged in the maintenance of living environment. The aim of this paper is to develop methods of measurement for the living environment improvement with residents participation through making the Living Environment Map. These methods were examined by case studies which were carried out with 22 residents associations in total from 2001 to 2008. Residents could have interests in their living environment and strong motivation to improve it by their participation in the measurements and meetings based on impressions of residents collected in each process of the activities. Effects of residents participation in the activities were confirmed through the case studies.
