Research on trend in Student Architectural Design Competition (1994-2008)

The jury of architectural design competition does select good plans among the entries made by many applicants who propose ideas and design solutions for architecture and urban design. In former research (On Transition of Idea Design Competition after the War Ⅱ and its Evaluation) made by Masao Koishikawa of the Junior College of Nihon University has proved that recently, the number of students participating in architectural design competitions is increasing. In this research we investigated the trend of competition for the period 1994 to 2008. We searched following topics;sponsor of competition, theme of competition, schedule and jury members. We investigated a total of 369 competitions by means of magazines and websites. In Japan, 65% of the sponsors of architectural design competitions are private enterprises and 21% building construction enterprise groups. There is a large variation of private enterprise which are sponsoring;building material companies (glass, plastic, and aluminum), architecture magazine company, building construction company, house building company, energy related companies (electric company) and so on. 41.1% of the competitions are proposals of housing plans. Other main themes are dealing with social problems in Japan and in the world;social problems such as aging of the population, and environmental problems such as global warming. Most of the competitions do have their jury between September and November, and mostly there are 2 screenings. In the first screening, the jury selects some good projects, in the second screening there is a hearing and finally the prices are decided. For all the investigated competitions, a total of 697 people were member of the jury. Most of the jury members were born between 1940 and 1950. Famous architects are often jury member, and recently, architect Kengo Kuma participated most of all as jury member. Architectural design competitions are a good method of architecture education, students get a chance to think and make proposals for architectural and urban problems, as well as their projects get judged by famous architects.
