The study on the behaviour of pedestriansat Canal-City Hakata in Fukuoka Japan.
Opened in 1996, Canal-city Hakata is one of the famous Large-scale, commercial facilities designed by Jon Jerdel, an American architect. After this project, he designed a series of representative commercial spaces in Japan such as Roppongi Hills, RiverWalk Kitakyusyu and Shiodomesio Site, which are all very popular and crowded all the time. His architectures feature is planning that blends organic design with gentle curves. We analyzed visitors behavior by taking videos on a spot of curved corridors. In this research, we focused on winding passages, which are a characteristic of Jon Jerdels architecture, grasped the behavior of visitors who stopped and stayed at the passages, and compared the tendency of the behavior between floors. Then, the entire construction has complex form and some of the large posts are located at the center of traffic line such as passages. We examined how those posts affect on pedestrians according to the difference of width of passages and the number of stopped visitors.
