Study on the performance of mass transfer on the bio-reactor process for wastewater treatment

The influence of mass transfer on randomly packed bed bio-reactor process for wastewater treatment were explored through the comparison between a hydraulic rotated media (SCMT) vs. a traditional packing material. Experimental results showed that the SCMT packed bed increased the oxygen transfer capacity of the bioreactor significantly. With its better mass transfer characteristics, the SCMT media created higher dissolved oxygen environmental conditions in every spot of bio-reactor when compared with the traditional polypropylene ladder-circle packing, thus less resident time and energy were needed for equivalent removal efficiency. The secondary treatment standards 《Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant discharge Standard (GB18918-2002)》 can be reached by the SCMT packed bed under a condition of HRT= 1.0h and gas to liquid rate ratio of 4 ∶1.
