An Overview of Research on China Urban Heat Island Effect and Response Research on Urban Construction

Chinas research on urban heat island effect started at the beginning of 1970s and rose at the beginning of this century. In this paper, research findings of doctoral dissertations, outstanding master thesis, journal articles, important conference papers and newspapers in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) on heat-island effect were analyzed in temporal dimension. It pointed out that studies in heat-island effect could be roughly divided into three stages in China and the achievements focused on its causes, harms and retarding countermeasures. It presented four characteristic of the researches in the views of researchers, subjects investigated, research methods and achievements. The causes and harms of heat-island effect were summarized. And countermeasures were proposed in city planning, urban landscaping, water body, ventilation, buildings, road traffic, green life and product style and relevant regulations. It is a trend of urbanization in China and its process may be not colourful. Heat-island effect is an objective fact that each city should face to. However, concrete analysis of concrete problems is the solution. It is system engineering of heat-island effect retarding and needs more methods to resolve. And we should focus on the main contradiction of its formation. At the end of the paper, it points out that the process of Chinas urbanization continuously speeds up (urbanization level reaches 44.9% at the end of 2008 and steadily increase with the speed of about 1.2% per year). Energy shortage and environmental pollution constantly worsen. Under this socio-economic background, research results of research on Chinas heat island effect shall be summarized and technical meted of reducing urban heat island effect shall be applied to urban construction, which have very important practical significance for constructing livable cities and improving the scientific urban planning.
