Adsorption Characteristics of Nitrobenzene onto Powdered Activated Carbon

The paper is focused on the adsorption nitrobenzene from aqueous solutions by powdered activated carbon (PAC). Equilibrium adsorption isotherms, kinetics models and competition with aniline were investigated. Equilibrium data obtained have been found to fit modified Freundlich adsorption isotherm with a correlation coefficient of 0.9928. The kinetic measurements confirm that the adsorption process follows a model involving pseudo-second-order reactions with a rate constants of 0.024 mg/min-ug, Intraparticle diffusion study show that the rate-limiting process is governed by film diffusion mainly. In the single or binary mixture solution, the adsorptive capacity of nitrobenzene is greater than aniline. For binary system, aniline has no negative effect on the amounts of nitrobenzene adsorbed. The affinity of PAC for nitrobenzene is greater than aniline.
