OUR and INT-ETS activity in the comparative characterization of sludge

In order to explore a method for rapidly evaluating the influence of heavy metal on activated sludge, the inhibition to sludge OUR and the INT-electron transport system (ETS) activity were studied. The result shows that the OUR is more sensitive to heavy metal toxicity than the INT-ETS. When activated sludge is polluted by heavy metal, it results in the similar decrease in OUR and COD removal and INT-ETS activity is less inhibited. By taking OUR as evaluation parameter, the heavy metal ions are ranked in the sequence of decreased toxicity: Hg2+> Cu2+> Ag+> Cd2+> Zn2+> Ni2+> Pb2 +, and based on INT-ETS activity they are ranked in the following sequence: Hg2+> Ag+> Cu2+> Cd2+> Zn2+> Ni2+> Pb2+. The OUR is an optimal parameter for characterizing the activated sludge affected by heavy metals.
