Performance Comparisons between Optical and Electrical Interconnections from Latency and Improved Bandwidth

This paper compares the optical and electrical interconnect systems by evaluating the latency and analyzing the bandwidth. With the increase of data and network intensive applications, data transmission instead of data computing has become more and more important. In this paper, a gridded memory model is used to judging the transmission latency, and the relationship between the latency and the bandwidth is also under our investigation. A comparative latency and bandwidth analysis shows that optical interconnects act much better than electrical interconnects. Therefore, the analysis about the relationship between the optical and electrical interconnect bandwidths which provide the same latency is given out at the end, and that guides engineers to choose the proper interconnect technologies and bandwidth.
