Survey on PFOS and PFOA in Water from Lake Biwa in Japan

A survey of PFOS and PFOA was performed for surface water from Lake Biwa and Seta River in February 2009. The concentrations were 1.0~2.4 ng/L for PFOS and 7.6~15.6 ng/L for PFOA. The concentrations PFOS 1.2 ng/L and PFOA 8.5 ng/L in a site 6B of Lake Biwa in this survey were almost the same levels as those by Ministry of the Environment, Japan in 2002. From this survey, it was clarified that the concentration levels of PFOS and PFOA in surface water from Lake Biwa and Seta River was not so high and considerably lower than Provisional Health Advisory values of PFOS (200 ng/L) and PFOA (400 ng/L) by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
