OCCURRENCES OF PERFLUORINATED COMPOUNDS IN EASTERN THAILAND

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are fully fluorinated organic compounds, which have been used in many industrial processes and are distributed all over the world, especially Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The purposes of this field study were to determine PFCs contamination in rivers, reservoirs, and coastal water, to recognize the possible sources of PFCs contaminations, and to compare the contamination level with other countries. Surveys were conducted in Eastern Thailand and samples were collected from rivers, reservoirs, and coastal water in the lower reach of industrial zones. A solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with HPLC-ESI-MS/MS were used. The geometric mean (GM) concentrations of each PFC were ranged from 2.3 to 107.7 ng/L in rivers, 2.2 to 212.2 ng/L in reservoirs, and 0.8 to 41.1 in coastal water samples. PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA were the predominant PFCs. The range of PFOS and PFOA concentration in surface waters were 3.1 – 572.5 ng/L and 10.9 – 402.3 ng/L respectively. PFOS and PFOA contamination levels in Thailand in industrial area were also comparable to those in the water environment of Japan. The elevated PFCs concentration in the area might originate from the industrial activities.
