ASSESSMENT OF BROMINATED FLAME RETARDANTS IN FISH FROM ASIAN COUNTRIES: LEVELS, DISTRIBUTION, PROFILES AND HEALTH RISK

Levels and spatial distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) were studied in fish samples collected from several countries in Asia, including Japan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. Concentrations of ΣPBDEs from mono- to hepta-BDE, ΣPBDEs from mono- to deca-BDE and ΣHBCDs (α-, β-, γ-HBCD) ranged from 0.30-2600 ng/g lipid wt., 0.40-2600 ng/g lipid wt., and nd-1300 ng/g lipid wt., respectively. Higher concentrations of BFRs were found in urban areas with levels of BFRs at some of these locations in the range of those observed in polluted areas worldwide. Among the locations, higher concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDs were found in fish collected from Yangtze River, China and Hija River, Okinawa-Japan, indicating that China and Japan are some of the major consumers of BFRs in Asia. BDE-47 was the predominant PBDE congener in all the countries constituting up to 80-100%, whereas levels of higher brominated congeners were much lower. Slightly different PBDE pattern were observed in fish samples collected from different locations, possibly due to differences in degree of usage of commercial PBDEs, species difference and/or various environmental processes. Daily intake was calculated according to the fish consumption reported by FAO and the results ranged from 0.96 ng PBDEs/day and 0.61 ng HBCDs by Laotian to 1000 ng PBDEs/day and 510 ng HBCDs/day by Japanese. The daily intake of PBDEs through fish from the countries which have better economical growth rate in Asia were similar or even higher than those for European and North American.
