THIRTY YEAR MONITORING OF PCBS AND ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES IN EEL FROM THE NETHERLANDS
Introduction Eel has some remarkable properties that make it a very attractive biomonitor (1). After a long journey from the Sargasso Sea, glass eels arrive in continental waters of Europe and northern Africa and stay at a certain location without further significant migration for a period of 10-20 years. The absence of spawning during their stay in their country of residence is a major advantage for trend monitoring: there is no seasonal disturbance of the contaminant pattern during almost their entire life span.
