HISTORICAL CONTAMINATION AND SOURCES OF ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES IN SEDIMENT CORES FROM XIAOHAI BAY, HAINAN PROVINCE,CHINA

Three sediment cores in Xiaohai Bay were collected for organochlorine pesticides analysis. The concentration of the surface sediments was lower than those from Xiamen and Quanzhou Bay, but was higher than those in Minjiang, Daya, and Pearl Delta. The concentration of sediment core located at the neck of Xiaohai Bay, near to the South Sea, is the highest in all three cores. This sediment core is located at the interchange place of freshwater and salt water; maybe the flocculation deposition is stronger than in other places, which is favor for the accumulation of organic pesticides in sediment. And the deposition condition is different for deep and surface sediment. DDTs at deep sediment were aged and mainly originated from weathered agricultural soils, and there were new DDT pesticide inputs at surface sediment. The study area is eutrophicated than in the past, which is polluted by agriculture and other human activity.
