REDUCTION OF POPs EMISSION FROM ALUMINUM ALLOY SMELTING PLANTS BY USING FABRIC FILTER

Removal efficiencies of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and HCB were investigated in an experimental fabric filter installed to flue gas line from a recycled aluminum smelting furnace to elucidate operating conditions of fabric filters suitable for reducing emissions of unintentionally produced POPs from aluminum alloy smelting plants. The results showed that dioxin formation in the fabric filter could not be ignored below 100 ℃ although it was recognized to be negligible at the inlet temperature of flue gas less than 200 ℃ in waste incinerators. More than 90 % removal efficiency of dioxins by fabric filters demanded to set the temperature of filter surface about 75 ℃ in aluminum smelting plants. Higher pressure drop of the fabric filter decreased removal efficiency of dioxins. Injection of NaOH solution was highly effective for dioxin reduction. These results indicated that dioxins were formed in the fabric filter, especially on the filter surface, at lower temperature. As for PCBs and HCB, injection of activated carbon was very helpful in reducing their emissions. These operating conditions had quite a different influence on reduction of PCBs and HCB by fabric filters from dioxins, which was connected to the difference of their formation mechanisms.
