TRANSFORMATION OF BROMINATED FLAME RETARDANT TETRABROMOBISPHENOL-A BY LACCASE

Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) is the most widely used brominated flame retardants. Thus, TBBPA has become a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment. Due to its environmental and health effects, degradation of TBBPA is of great interest. Anaerobic microbial degradation or transformation is very limited and slow. Aerobic degradation of this compound has not been reported. In this study, we report the enzymatic transformation of TBBPA by Trametes versicolor laccase and its redox mediator system under aerobic condition. Laccase mediated transformation of TBBPA (5 μg/mL) resulted in 74.5% and 84.0 % removal of TBBPA in the absence and presence of the redox mediator syringaldehyde, respectively. Comparison of effects of lignin related phenolic compounds as redox mediators on TBBPA removal revealed that only syringaldehyde showed enhanced TBBPA removal. Reverse phase HPLC analysis revealed that hydrophobic products formed in the absence of syringaldehyde. In contrast, no hydrophobic product was observed in the presence of syringaldehyde. In addition, release of bromide ions was observed both in the presence and absence of redox mediator. This result suggests that debromination of TBBPA is occurred during laccase mediated transformation. Our results indicate that laccase mediator system could be applied for TBBPA degradation.
