PCBs AND OCPs IN ZOOLPLANKTON FROM LAKE BAIKAL, RUSSIA:TEMPORAL AND SEASONAL TRENDS

We investigated the temporal distribution of PCBs and OCPs in archived samples of zooplankton collected in 1979-2004 from the southern part of Lake Baikal and frozen zooplankton samples collected in time of open water 2004-2005 in 12 km from the Cape of Poloviniy in the South Lake Baikal. The POPs levels varied significantly in the investigated period. The mean levels in archive samples of zooplankton were 730 ng/g lipids for total PCBs, 1600 ng/g lipids for DDT and its metabolites, and 250 ng/g lipids for α- and γ-HCHs. The significant decreasing during 1979-2004 was found for the sum of DDTs. A noticeable decreasing of PCBs has not been found since 1985. The HCH levels were increased in 1990s. The changes of POPs composition and levels are probably associated with economic activity in the region and possibly with long range transport of pesticides (HCH) from the southern region. Several elevations of POPs levels in zooplankton have been found: in summer (August), before icing (the end of December) and after ice melting (May). The changing of quantity and size of zooplankton during a year can play a certain role in the distribution of POPs in Lake Baikal.
