DIOXINS AND HEAVY METALS LEVELS IN BLOOD FOR THE VICINITY RESIDENTS oF THE MUNICIPAL WASTE INCINERATOR IN KOREA

This report determined concentrations of dioxins and heavy metals in blood and analyzed the relationship of the pollutants levels in blood from individuals in the vicinity of the MSWI. Blood samples were obtained 2008 from 241 volunteers who were residents living in the vicinity area of the MSWI. For background exposure, the general population included 44 adults living in the urban area not including the MSWI. Detection ranges of the pollutants in blood of the vicinity residents were 0.71-21.65 pg-TEQ/g lipid for dioxins, <0.005-8.53 ug/L for Hg, 4.17-54.33 ug/L for Pb, and <0.005-4.64 ug/L for Cd. For general subjects, the detection ranges were 4.64-11.86 pg-TEQ/g lipid, <0.005-4.78 ug/L, 7.82-81.40 ug/L, and <0.005-3.24 ug/L, respectively, dioxins, Hg, Pb, and Cd. The levels of target pollutants in blood were only significantly correlated the age of subjects. The dioxins level was significantly related Hg in blood, and Pb and Cd in blood were connected with each other for non-smokers. We conclude that there is the lack of relationship between emission from MSWI and body burden of target pollutants in their vicinity exposure from the MSWI. While the individual factors such as age are associated with the levels of target pollutants in blood.
