DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF PCBS AND PHENOLS IN SURFACE WATER OF DIANCHI LAKE, CHINA

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels and distribution characteristics of typical endocrine disrupting chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and phenols, in the surface water collected from 10 sampling sites located in state key monitoring sections of Dianchi Lake, Kunming, China. The total concentrations of PCBs (sum of 6 congeners) were varied from 26.6 to 87.4 ng/L, with a mean value of 49.9 ng/L. Water sample with the highest PCBs concentrations came from the site located in east of Guanyinshan. Conversely, PCBs concentrations in the water from the site located in west of Guanyinshan was relatively low. The phenols, such as 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-cumylphenol, 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A, were detected in most water samples with maximum concentration of 56.6 ng/L, 48.5 ng/L, 141.6 ng/L and 4713.6 ng/L, respectively. The highest concentration was obtained at Duanqiao site, which is the most close to Kunming. Bisphenol A is the most abundant chemical among the phenols and the concentrations was decreased gradually with distance from the city and industrial areas.
