DEVELOPMENT OF MONITORING SYSTEM FOR PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN OFFSHORE WATERS AROUND JAPAN: RESULTS FROM THE FIRST INVESTIGATION IN THE EAST CHINA SEA

To establish a monitoring system for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the offshore waters and to elucidate their contamination status, distribution and fate around Japan, an investigation was conducted in the East China Sea during December, 2008. Two thousand liters of seawater was collected and concentrated using an on-site sampler at sampling stations located in the course of the Kuroshio Current in the East China Sea. Except for several compounds, almost all the POPs analyzed in this study were detected in the water samples even at very low concentrations (<0.01~10 pg/L). This indicates the usability and effectiveness of our method for POPs monitoring in the offshore water. We collected surface sediment samples also at several locations of the East China Sea and determined various POPs. The concentrations of POPs in the samples collected from the East China Sea were much lower than those in the coastal regions such as Tokyo Bay. The residue profiles of POPs in the sediments varied between the sampling locations, which may be due to differences between the fluxes of POPs to the bottom sediment of the continental shelf and deep-sea trough in the East China Sea.
