PCB LEVELS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE PCBs CONTAINING FACILITIES

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were analyzed for 209 PCB congeners by GC/HRMS of whole environmental samples HVAS (n=60), PAS (n=34), pine needle (n=2), soil (n=1) taken surrounding the PCBs containing facility. These sampling sites are a major contributor to the environmental concentrations of PCBs and the sampling sites were categorized into five facilities (In use, Storage, Manufacture, Disposal & Clean, Recycle facility). The mean Σ209 PCB concentrations in air using HVAS and PAS were 8332.3 and 33859.0 pg m- 3. A gradient of the total PCBs in different sites using HVAS and PAS (Disposal & Clean > Recycle > Manufacture > Storage > In use > Background) was observed, suggesting the Disposal & Clean facility may be the most important source of environmental PCBs. The mean Σ209 PCB concentration in pine needle and soil were 5845.3 (pg g-1) and 1127.5 (pg g-1), respectively. And the concentrations of PCB11 was up to 0.45 - 0.53% (air) and 13.9 - 1.6% (pine needle and soil) of total PCBs in environmental media but only up to 0.16% of commercial Aroclor mixtures11. This result suggests volatilization of this compound from painted surfaces of the PCBs containing equipment although the actual source of PCB11 was unknown.
