ANALYSIS OF POLYCHLORINATED DIBENZO-P-DIOXINS AND DIBENZOFURANS IN VARIOUS AQUEOUS SAMPLES IN TAIWAN
Groundwater and surface water samples were taken from reservoir and tap water treatment plants in Taiwan for measurement of PCDD/F concentrations. Due to low concentrations of PCDD/Fs, water samples (400-1000 liters) were collected by using the on-site large volume pre-concentration system and analyzed by isotope dilution method HRGC-HRMS. The results showed that the total PCDD/Fs in groundwater and surface water were 0.007-0.039 pg WHO-TEQ/L, 0.007-0.258 pg WHO-TEQ/L, respectively which are lower than the standard set by Taiwan-EPA (12 pg WHO-TEQ/L) for drinking water. The recoveries of internal standards ranged from 60-117% which met the QA/QC criteria of standard method M1613 B. The low percentage of total PCDD/Fs (<5%) in PUF of water samples indicated their low solubility in water. As a result of their hydrophobicity, most of the PCDD/F congeners were removed via the water treatment process (>98% removal efficiency).
