PROFICIENCY TEST ON DETERMINATION OF PCDD/Fs AND PCBs IN FISH OIL
In 2008, a proficiency test on the determination of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs and indicator PCBs in fish oil was organized by the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food, Freiburg, Germany. 52 laboratories registered for this PT, 51 reported results for the required parameters using GC/MS methods or GC/ECD methods. The fish oil sample contained WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ and WHO-PCB-TEQ concentrations in the range of maximum levels and action levels defined for marine oils as foodstuff in Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 and Commission Recommendation 2006/88/EC. More than 3/4th of the participating laboratories reported results within ± 2 z-scores of the assigned value for TEQ results and the sum of six indicator PCBs. Results from laboratories applying bioassays show a tendency to underestimation of the assigned WHO-total-TEQ (50% of results were within ± 2 z-scores of the assigned value) and WHO-PCB-TEQ values, and to an overestimation of the assigned value for WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ. No significant influence on results from the type of bioassay (DR-CALUX or XDS-CALUX) applied by the laboratories, or from the applied methods for extraction, clean-up and evaluation of results was observed.
