DIOXINS, PCBs, POLYBROMINATED DIPHENYLETHERS AND ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES IN EUROPEAN EELS (ANGUILLA ANGUILLA)
In the past 5 years, 62 freshwater European eel samples were analyzed for dioxins and dl-PCBs. In 54% of these samples the dioxin and dl-PCB TEQ values were above the European maximal residue (MRL) level of respectively 4 and 12 ng TEQ per kilogram fish. Indicator PCBs were analyzed in 107 fish samples. The PCB 153 content exceeded 8 times the Dutch MRL of 500 ng/g. Polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE) were analyzed in 2004 and 2008. In all eel samples the most dominant PBDE congener was 47, followed by PBDE 100. The concentration of these two PBDEs was increased from 2004 to 2008. Nona-BDEs (203, 205, 206, 207 and 208) were not detected in eel (LOD=0.02 ng/g), deca-BDE (209) was present in 14 of the 23 samples. Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) were analyzed in 107 fish samples, the MRL of hexachlorocyclohexan was exceeded in one sample while in another sample the MRL of aldrin, dieldrin and endrin exceeded the MRL. GCxGC-TOFMS analysis of the eel samples showed the presence of other persistent organic pollutants.
