Carbopack X Metal-Passivated Adsorbent Tube for 24-Hour Diffusive Sampling of 1,3-Butadiene and 24 Additional Volatile Organic Compounds
A new Carbopack.X adsorbent tube has been developed in collaboration with the U.S. EPA for the diffusive monitoring of 1,3-butadiene and 24 other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The monitoring of 1,3-butadiene is necessary due to the adverse health effects of this compound at trace atmospheric levels (i.e., 0.03 μg/m3). The major sources of 1,3-butadiene are internal combustion engines and tobacco smoking. In addition to sampling for 1,3-butadiene, capturing other VOCs was also of interest. Carbopack X was chosen for its ability to retain 1,3-butadiene along with being able to effectively retain and release other VOCs. Carbopack X is a porous graphitized carbon black (GCB) that allows for an optimum adsorption and subsequent thermal desorption of a wide range of organic compounds. The use of a GCB also provides an inert surface area (i.e., a Type I, non-specific adsorbent) so that effective desorption occurs.1 To improve the reproducibility of the thermally desorbed samples, a metal deactivating/passivating process has been developed to create an inert surface within the metal thermal desorption tube. The combination of the deactivated tube and the Carbopack X creates a reproducible diffusive sampler for the chosen 25 compounds of interest.
