Evaluating the sediment-water exchange of PAHs with the fugacity approach in sea area around Dalian, China
Surface sediment and sea water samples were collected concurrently from sea area Dalian, China, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured to estimate sediment-water exchange using fugacity ratio approach. The fugacity ratios (fS/fW) were calculated based on the PAH concentrations in sediment and water. The calculations showed that the values of fS/fW increased with decreasing the molecular weight of PAHs. The values of fS/fW for lighter weight PAHs, indene and naphthalene, larger than one, showing the sediment acted as a secondary source to the water for these two PAHs in the sea area around Dalian. Values of fS/fW for all five and six ring PAHs were always lower than one in all sampling sites, which mean the sediment as an sink for these heavier weight PAHs from sea water. Some lighter weight PAHs, such as 2-methylnaphthalene and phenathene, and most medium weight PAHs, such as fluoranthene and pyrene, were close to the sediment-water equilibrium and the tendency shifted between sediment and water at different sites. These results indicated that sediment-water partitioning equilibrium of the medium weight PAHs was more sensitive to the PAHs concentrations than the lighter and heavier weight PAHs.
