OPTIMIZATION AND APPLICATION OF ION TRAP MASS SPECTROMETRY TO THE DETERMINATION OF PCDD/F IN AMBIENT AIR SAMPLES
Dioxins analysis is currently used for general environmental monitoring. High resolution mass spectromety (HRMS) based on sector instruments has long been, and still is, the reference measurement method for PCDD/Fs. As an alternative to HRMS, gas chromatography coupled to ion trap mass spectrometry (IT-MS/MS) has been reported as a valuable technique for the determination of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and other POPs in environmental matrices. The overall objective of this study was to establish a robust, reliable and cost-effective method which can be routinely applied to a determination of PCDD/Fs in ambient air samples. A set of instrumental parameters for the IT-MS/MS Thermo-Fisher system in the MS/MS mode was established, in order to achieve maximum sensitivity. In order to examine in depth the feasibility of the proposed method for the determination of PCDD/Fs in ambient air samples, a validation study comparing both GC-ITMS/MS and HRGC/HRMS methods was performed, analyzing the same sample with both instrumentation three times. Good agreement between GC-ITMS/MS and GC/HRMS techniques was obtained for all individual congeners.
