SPATIAL TRENDS OF PBDES IN SEDIMENT OF THE GREAT LAKES

The North American Great Lakes, which have watersheds that range from remote to highly populated, are ideal for studying the factors controlling the spatial trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Here we evaluate the spatial trends of PBDEs in sediment at approximately 220 sites at open water, nearshore, and at the mouth of tributary locations in the Great Lakes. The ΣPBDE concentrations were highest in some nearshore and tributary sediment collected from urban areas in Lake Ontario, with levels up ~800 ng/g dry weight. Most other sites had concentrations less than 20 ng/g dry weight, comparable with those previously found at sites not impacted by local sources. At offshore sites, PBDE-209 dominated the congener profile, which is typical of sediment collected throughout the world. However, the percent contribution of PBDE-209 decreased with increasing latitude, consistent with this fully brominated congener being less susceptible to long-range transport compared to lighter compounds. In contrast, the sediment at nearshore and tributary locations that had elevated concentrations were in some cases dominated by the lighter congeners, especially PBDE-47 and -99. Our results suggest that multiple local sources and technical mixtures contribute to PBDE contamination in sediment by urban areas.
