DISTRIBUTION AND SOURCE OF POLYBROMINATED DIPHENYL ETHERS IN TAIWAN INDOOR ENVIRONMENT
We investigated the concentration of PBDEs in five indoor environments including kindergarten, office building, cinema, airport lobby, and department store at Taiwan. Average concentration of PBDEs in indoor air analyzed by GC/MS was 117.5 pg m-3 (46.2 ~ 261.0 pg m-3). Elevated PBDEs levels were found in, the kindergarten exercise room and children playground in department store. Numerous plastics such as cushions, toys and apparatuses were used at both locations. The average concentration of PBDEs in plastic items used in the kindergarten was 2360 ng g-1 (802~5468 ng g-1). Principal component analysis results revealed high correlation between the PBDEs in exercise room indoor air and soft plastic cushions. The finding implies that PBDEs concentration, matrix nature, as well as the frequency and habit of use dominate the release of PBDEs.
