THE ANALYSIS OF PHARMACEUTICALS IN SEWAGE AND LIVESTOCK SLUDGE SAMPLES
In this study, 18 pharmaceuticals in sludge samples from sewage treatment plants (STPs) and livestock wastewater treatment plants (LWTPs) in Korea were analyzed with LC/MS/MS to understand their occurrence and distribution patterns. Acetylsalicylic acid (Mean: 44.30 mg/kg) and oxytetracycline (Mean: 42.96 mg/kg) were dominant in sludge samples from STPs and LWTPs, respectively. The different distribution patterns of pharmaceuticals were observed according to sludge types but acetylsalicylic acid was detected in most of sludge samples compared to the other target compounds (over 90%). The concentrations of antibiotics in sludge samples from LWTPs were 24 times higher than STPs, possibly due to the high usage of antibiotics in livestock industry.
