A NATIONWIDE SURVEY OF PERFLUORINATED COMPOUNDS IN SURFACE WATER SAMPLES FROM 47 PREFECTURES IN JAPAN

Concentrations of 27 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were measured in 83 surface water samples (rivers, runoff, rain water, drain waters, stream/channel waters and agricultural waters) from 47 prefectures in Japan. The concentrations of PFOS were in the range of <0.25-19 ng/L (median: 0.72 ng/L), while those of PFOA were in the range of <0.05-92 ng/L (median: 2.2 ng/L). The samples from the Kanto region had the highest median PFOS/PFOA concentrations among the seven regions in Japan. The median PFOA (2.2 ng/L) and PFNA (1.7 ng/L) concentrations in the present study were comparable to those of a 122-sample survey of the European Union (EU). The median concentration of PFOS (0.72 ng/L) in the present study was about eight-fold lower than that reported by the European study. Additionally, short-chain PFCs (C2-C5) were measured in the present study. PFPrA and PFBA were predominant and frequently detected in the water samples. This nationwide survey provides preliminary data on the extent of PFC contamination in different regions in Japan.
