BACKGROUND AIR MONITORING PROJECT ON POPS PESTICIDES IN EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES 2004-2008

The background air monitoring of POPs pesticides were conducted to contribute the effectiveness evaluation of Stockholm Convention, Article 16, and to build the monitoring capacity of participating countries. Fourteen monitoring sites were selected, collected samples were analyzed in Japan, and each analyzed data were returned to each participating country where the sampling was conducted. These sampling sites were available for the monitoring of long range transportation from outside and within the East and South-east Asia region. Most of the POPs pesticides were detected in every monitoring sites and obtained data were sufficiently low. It was recognized that these data could contribute to further effectiveness evaluation of Stockholm Convention as the initial monitoring data. Based on the outcome of this project, the needs of frequent monitoring was pointed out and the implementation of frequent monitoring was approved.
