Long-term sampling and determination of Dioxins and DL-PCBs from clinker kiln air emissions using conventional fuels

In this work, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDF), and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCB) concentrations from stack gas emissions were determined in samples collected by using continuous sampling system on a monthly basis in a clinker kiln operating with conventional fuel. Results of 6 different campaigns reported levels from 0,32 to 1,84 pg I-TEQ/Nm3 with an average of 0,93 pg ITEQ/ Nm3 for dioxins, and from 0,14 to 0,73 pg WHO-TEQ/Nm3 with an average of 0,37 pg WHO-TEQ/Nm3 for DL-PCBs. These results were compared to a regular short-time sampling measurement. The findings reveal that, at these low levels, short-time sampling measures over-estimates the TEQ value, moreover the congener-specific profile information is lost when the collected flue gas volume is around 10Nm3. In addition, congener distribution were reported for both PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs and two blank were evaluated showing that, at these low levels, blank contribution is significant only for shorttime sampling.
