DISTRIBUTION OF PCBs AND OCPs IN AIR IN THE IRKUTSK REGION, RUSSIA
The PCBs and OCPs levels were investigated in air by installation of passive air sampling devices using polyurethane foam disks in 13 sites in urban and rural areas of the Irkutsk Region in June-August, 2008. It was found that the PCBs, DDTs, alpha-HCH and chlordanes levels vary in a wide range (280-2730 pg PCB/m3, 65-1440 pg DDTs/m3, 19-365 pg alpha-HCH/m3, 1.6-430 pg chlordanes/m3). The elevated PCB and OCP levels were found in some industrial towns (Usole-Sibirskoe and Bratsk) where factories of chlorine industry are located, and in the settlement Khuzhyr located on the biggest island on Lake Baikal. The POPs levels were in the range obtained in the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) study. The mean ratio pp-DDT/pp-DDE in soil samples varied from 0.43 up to 2.8. The POPs levels in air obtained in 2008 were lower than levels of the end of 1990s and comparable to ones found in the beginning of 1990s in the region.
