ENRICHMENT OF ANAEROBIC BIO-DECHLORINATION ACTIVITY OF CHLORINATED AROMATICS FROM PADDY SOIL FOR BIOREMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY

Anaerobic microbial dechlorination activity was successfully enriched from a non-contaminated paddy field soils by using lactate or related acids as electron donors under anaerobic conditions. Pentachlorophenol was completely dechlorinated into phenol. Polychlorinated biphenyl mixture (Kanechlor 300/400) was also dechlorinated substantially, probably to mostly dichloro- or monochlorobiphenyls. 4,5,6,7-tetrachlorophthalide (fthalide) was dechlorinated into 4-chlorophthalide. The enriched dechlorinating anaerobic microbial consortia contained large proportions of Firmicutes, which was documented by PCR-DGGE analysis targeting 16S-rRNA genes. The enriched microbial consortia dechlorinating pentachlorophenol or fthalide were successfully utilized as the dechlorinating permeable barriers in model experiments using anaerobic flow column system.
