ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND SPECIMEN BANKING: POPS / NEW POPS POLLUTION IN JAPAN AND ASIA-PACIFIC
Environmental monitoring has been providing scientific basis for sound management of chemicals, including information on levels and trends of pollution, their sources, exposure levels, and effectiveness of chemical management systems. During the first effectiveness evaluation of the Stockholm Convention, much effort has been paid by the Parties and supporting organizations to collect environmental monitoring data and to arrange regional/sub-regional environmental monitoring framework. Also important supplemental roles of Environmental Specimen Banking, long-term storage of samples collected during the monitoring for future retrospective analysis, have been recognized by the Parties. In this presentation, environmental monitoring data of POPs / new POPs chemicals in Japan as well as in Asia-Pacific region will be summarized briefly together with our data on spatial / temporal trends of POPs / new POPs in Japan / Asia-Pacific as revealed by the analysis of archived biological samples in the Environmental Specimen Bank, Environmental Time Capsule facility.
