The Influence of Kinship between CEO and Controlling Owner on Innovative Competence

This Paper examines whether the kinship between the CEO and the controlling owner has an effect on the firm’s innovative competence in family firms using a pyramid structure. Based on panel data of Chinese-listed family-owned firms,we find that the kinship between the CEO and the controlling owner is positively related to the firm’s innovative competence. That is, when the CEO is a family member, the firm’s innovative competence is stronger, otherwise, when the CEO is a nonfamily member, the firm’s innovative competence is weaker.
